Generally I duck out when shootings happen because I don’t want to pile on “analytical” crap (how I unhealthily-cope) when I should just be grieving and extending condolences.

But all these hateful conspiracy theories…about Jews, about Muslims, about women…draw from the same pool of tropes. One of my first big observations on this site is that anti-Islam pundits were freely borrowing from the narrative of the Protocols, just flipping the religion. A few years ago I pointed out that the flow of information on the Internet—and ultimately, the algorithm—creates a breadcrumb trail from the watered-down versions to the original and explicitly antisemitic versions.

It’s happened. Behind the Big Lie of “lone wolves” acting out white supremacy is a Bigger Lie that each manifestation of prejudice as cruelty and deceit is distinct and of a different substance from any other. The stories are the same because they all have the same purpose: to make the tellers and listeners heroes—regardless of their morals—and to sanctify cruelty. Variation and creativity are unimportant because the targets are unimportant; the only thing that matter is the gratification of the in-group.

They want to be told they are Good, but also have no true standard of Goodness. They want their beliefs to be True, but held to no standard of truth. White supremacy, misogyny, bigoted reactionary “Christianity,” blind authoritarian impulses in which “I” am the exception deserving of toleration and mercy…adherence to the self-gratifying Lie unites them. Too cowardly to be nihilist; too dull to engage with the world outside of power games; too arrogant to acknowledge how other people can uplift and comfort; too proud to admit that any of the former are flaws, that people are different, can be different.

Whiteness is meaningless by design: it changes definition as needed, appropriating the triumphs of philosophers and warriors, the prestige of whole cultures, but curating out the embarrassing individuals and rendering the horror justified by whiteness. It was built to be hollow, to be a vessel for whatever abuse was handed down by the powerful. It is the suggestion of a natural hierarchy, argued in bad faith, appropriating verisimilitude by aping the language of veracity…godly, scientific, philosophical…in shallow ways.

Any ideology or Big Idea that accommodates whiteness must, by necessity, engage in the same continuous mutilation of truth…and in history we can see this happen. In the current day, we can watch continuous updates of “what is the True” and the empty sophism used to justify shallow, cruel positions transform in real time. What has been done to God to justify the vices of slavers, Arab or European? What is the meaning of civilization, if it requires the continuous denial of civilized folk doing terrible things just beyond the pale? And make no mistake—it is precisely the notions they hold most sacred that they hollow out, because the culture of the Lie desires only the facade.

They lie first, and most, to themselves. It’s not some odd coincidence that they are a coalition of people who only find humor in other’s distress; that they in bad faith try and align our anger against one another; that their imagining are derivative and one-dimensional. It is not serendipity that all of them value power over connection with other people. They harm us because, by existing, we contradict them.

We are all being wounded with the same weapon, even as our attackers tell us to ignore history and fear each other. And when they have finished with us, they will turn it on each other, because the culture of the Lie requires an outsider to destroy and a subordinate to tread on.

I’m going to be gone all of May and half of June. I want to travel; it heals me. I hope you find something that heals you. I feel no fatalism about this trip, I just feel compelled to say: whatever else happens, be good to one another, be creative, and remember to laugh joyfully. Because that’s exactly what these fuckers are trying to take from you.

Well, that and Texas is famous for voter suppression (Paxton’s stunt only being the latest).

That’s the state which recently prohibited a federal judge from voting, due to Texas requiring maiden names on drivers’ licenses. That makes it awfully tough for married women to vote.

The rallies are an opportunity for Trump to release his id. There’s no script and no expectation that he will be “presidential.” He uses them as a substitute for his TV show, where he got to play a part — the fictional Donald Trump who knows all and can do all.

On the one hand, it keeps him out of the White House and away from potential trouble. On the other hand, it exposes the most hateful assortment of people to someone who will excuse their behavior, even if it means people will die at their hands as a result.

I hope he gets his ass handed to him in 2020.

I haven’t read the article, but I can guess they have sunk too much money into “keeping up with the Joneses,” who have at least two expensive cars, a boat, a vacation home, a McMansion, and kids in private schools. Their vacations are likely to far off places, where they hole up in ritzy hotels and only go to ritzy restaurants. IOW, lots of conspicuous consumption. Probably a lot of their income goes toward servicing debt, as well.

I would not mind trying out a $500K income for a year or two. I’d probably be able to save at least 75% of it.

The DCCC is apparently opposing anyone who enters a primary against a sitting representative or senator.

That has Wonkette’s Robyn Pennacchia upset with the DCCC. She lives in Illinois, and despises Dan Lapinski; as such, she prefers his primary opponent Marie Newman.

And yet, for reasons pretty much no one understands… we have fucking Dan Lipinski. Dan Lipinski, who would make sense if he were representing a Republican area of the state as a Republican, but who instead represents a reliably blue district as a “Democrat” who is basically a Republican. And a bad Republican at that. He hates reproductive rights and also gay people. He voted against the ACA and for DOMA. If he had a little “R” next to his name, we’d be getting all kinds of fundraising emails about how we have to stop him. But he does not. So the DCCC is doing all it can to tank the campaign of Marie Newman, a candidate who believes that abortion should stay legal and that gay people are human beings deserving of rights. Like a regular-ass Democrat.

You see, the DCCC has been very concerned—ever since that young, socialisty upstart Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez unfairly stole a Congressional seat that rightfully belonged to some old white dude and started going around charming the entire nation with her appealing ideas and snappy comebacks—about progressives mounting primary challenges to Democratic incumbents.

In order to put a stop to this, DCCC chair Cheri Bustos announced in March that they would refuse to work with any vendors or anybody who worked on the campaigns of those who primary Democratic incumbents. Thus, the DCCC — which has decided that Illinois is stuck with Dan Lipinski forever whether we like it or not — has been going balls to the wall on threatening anyone who does anything for Newman’s campaign.

I pretty much find the DCCC useless. There are very few political campaigns I have ever donated to (lack of $$$ for that), but they always go directly to the candidate.

So my free month of Netflix is coming to an end… and not finding anything new that entices me I decided to go back and view the first season of ST:TNG…

… and I am continually struck about how not-attached-to-reality these “sci-fi” shows can be.

A big disconnect (in Star Trek in general) with reality is the total disregard for Newton and all of the foundational knowledge of physics. For example, Picard says that the Enterprise is “travelling on impulse power”. For some reason, in the Star Trek universe, Newton’s Laws don’t apply.

And that “some reason” is this: as a show, ST is an Earth surface naval adventure (of the 18th-20th centuries) but set in space outside of Earth.

On a ship on water, one needs to be ” travelling on impulse power” to go in any direction in which the wind is not blowing, because the friction with the water will cause any ship momentum to be transferred to the water, thus the ship will stop relative to the local water.

But of course that is only due to travelling through water. In a nearly complete vacuum any ship will just keep on moving, no “impulse power” is needed, with whatever velocity was the initial value.

Star Trek is far from the worse, but it is pretty bad when it comes to reality.

Most of what goes by on TV (and large screen) as “science fiction” is, in my opinion, just alternative religion.

Anyway, “impulse power” is only needed for acceleration. But here’s the thing with Star Trek spaceships - once a thing is going some decent fraction of the speed of light (say .5c), it is very very difficult to increase one’s speed wrt light speed by any transfer of momentum. In the real universe, it becomes increasingly difficult to increase speed the faster one’s speed already may be… and this relativistic understanding of the rocket equation is why going to another star in any acceptable-to-human-lifespans is not going to be possible.

As for the Star Trek universe, they wave away Newtonian physics by inventing “inertial dampeners,” so stuff and people in the ship don’t go flying around during normal velocity changes. Freetoken’s complaint about needing impulse power to keep moving is well taken, though. I had similar complaints about the ships needing to use power to maintain an orbit around a planet. No, once you insert the ship into a suitable orbit, power down the engines, Scotty.

SF scriptwriters often suck at basic physics.

The impulse engines IIRC were useful only for sub-light travel. Warp drive was for anything above c.

That said, the writers were far from consistent in referring to appropriate speeds for the various propulsion systems. As I said, the writers often suck at basic physics. I just ignore the bad science and try to focus on the stories. I had a colleague, a high school English teacher, who claimed ST: TNG was like a modern version of Shakespeare, recycling old plots into new settings and characters.

The only SF series screening now that comes close to believable physics is The Expanse, at least until it delves into the protomolecule’s alien tech.

Well, Wikipedia [citation needed] lists first and second language speakers as English first, then Mandarin second. Hindi takes the Bronze, followed by Spanish, then French.

For native speakers only, they list Mandarin first, then Spanish, then English. Hindi, Arabic (all), Bengali, Portuguese, Russian, Japanese, and Lahnda (all) round out the top ten.

We could wind up with Spanish syntax mixed with Mandarin (that would be odd).

I really enjoyed as far as I got in Eric Flint’s 1632 series…

a 5-mile diameter chunk of 1999 West Virginia gets transposed, for some glossed-over sci-fi reason, with a same size chunk of 1632 Germany. The WV section includes a coal-fired electric plant, a metalwork machine shop (they make excellent cannons), a small hospital, a high-school with a pretty good library and chemistry lab, everybody in town has hunting rifles, one of the girls is an Olympic-level sharpshooter, a Vietnam vet has some seriously illegal 50-cal weapons buried in his backyard, a bunch of union coal miners are in town for a wedding…

My favorite of their changes to history was that Grantville decides they need to open trade relations with the Ottoman Empire much earlier than happened in our timeline, because “COFFEE!! They’re the only place in the world we can get COFFEE!!!! And we need opium too, but mostly COFFEE!!!!!”

Eventually he retired, knowing how I felt and having done wonderful surgery on my eyes, and helping me with my husband’s final illness. And the docs that took over for him don’t keep Fox on.

Not sure what the moral of that story is!

House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler (D-N.Y.) fired back Sunday at Attorney General William Barr after the attorney general warned he may not appear at a scheduled committee hearing this week.

Yeah: I dropped a comment on the WaPo site on that very matter: whatever their editorial practices may be re quotes, etc.: the problem is that the headline, as composed, makes it look like those are “scare quotes” - i.e. inducing doubt - around the term “hate crimes”. Think of these people as no different than (from?) children who grew up in poverty and then, through athletic skill and years of training, are suddenly given multi-million dollar contracts to play professional sports. They replace years of deprivation with uncontrolled expenditures to purchase anything that strikes their fancy — or that allows them to compete with their neighbors.

Maybe if more took seriously the money management classes that many are forced to take during high school, they would be better prepared. Certainly too many middle class children are raised to feel entitled.

The most ridiculous part of the article talked about how their savings are so modest because after their expenses — including discretionary expenses — they have little left over. There is also mention they should budget to pay the minimum on credit card debt, instead of lecturing them that they should be paying off their credit card monthly, except if there is a real emergency.

I haven’t read the article, but I can guess they have sunk too much money into “keeping up with the Joneses,” who have at least two expensive cars, a boat, a vacation home, a McMansion, and kids in private schools. Their vacations are likely to far off places, where they hole up in ritzy hotels and only go to ritzy restaurants. IOW, lots of conspicuous consumption. Probably a lot of their income goes toward servicing debt, as well.

I would not mind trying out a $500K income for a year or two. I’d probably be able to save at least 75% of it.

if I made 500k for 4 years, I could literally retire. I could easily invest a million dollars in perfectly safe stuff that would generate around 35k a year. That’s more than enough for my needs.

So my free month of Netflix is coming to an end… and not finding anything new that entices me I decided to go back and view the first season of ST:TNG…

… and I am continually struck about how not-attached-to-reality these “sci-fi” shows can be.

A big disconnect (in Star Trek in general) with reality is the total disregard for Newton and all of the foundational knowledge of physics. For example, Picard says that the Enterprise is “travelling on impulse power”. For some reason, in the Star Trek universe, Newton’s Laws don’t apply.

And that “some reason” is this: as a show, ST is an Earth surface naval adventure (of the 18th-20th centuries) but set in space outside of Earth.

On a ship on water, one needs to be ” travelling on impulse power” to go in any direction in which the wind is not blowing, because the friction with the water will cause any ship momentum to be transferred to the water, thus the ship will stop relative to the local water.

But of course that is only due to travelling through water. In a nearly complete vacuum any ship will just keep on moving, no “impulse power” is needed, with whatever velocity was the initial value.

Star Trek is far from the worse, but it is pretty bad when it comes to reality.

Most of what goes by on TV (and large screen) as “science fiction” is, in my opinion, just alternative religion.

Anyway, “impulse power” is only needed for acceleration. But here’s the thing with Star Trek spaceships - once a thing is going some decent fraction of the speed of light (say .5c), it is very very difficult to increase one’s speed wrt light speed by any transfer of momentum. In the real universe, it becomes increasingly difficult to increase speed the faster one’s speed already may be… and this relativistic understanding of the rocket equation is why going to another star in any acceptable-to-human-lifespans is not going to be possible.

what? you made it through the two dozen episodes that are solved by Data making use of a “tachyon stream” or a “positronic flow burst,” but you got hung up on “impulse power”? Let me explain impulse power to you. I’m a middle-aged man. I’ve been running on impulse power for about 10 years now. The dilithium crystals burned out sometime in the oughts.

Think of these people as no different than (from?) children who grew up in poverty and then, through athletic skill and years of training, are suddenly given multi-million dollar contracts to play professional sports. They have no concept of what this money really means or a clue on how to manage it. They replace years of deprivation with uncontrolled expenditures to purchase anything that strikes their fancy — or that allows them to compete with their neighbors.

Maybe if more took seriously the money management classes that many are forced to take during high school, they would be better prepared. Certainly too many middle class children are raised to feel entitled.

The most ridiculous part of the article talked about how their savings are so modest because after their expenses — including discretionary expenses — they have little left over. There is also mention they should budget to pay the minimum on credit card debt, instead of lecturing them that they should be paying off their credit card monthly, except if there is a real emergency.

It’s called living within your means
At whatever the level
